Growing W.I.S.E. is a 5-week workshop series. Each workshop is held at a hosting high school campus and occurs once a week. Facilitated by volunteer graduate students from around San Antonio, these workshop provide in-depth guidance to students to advance the understanding of basic molecular biology and biochemistry concepts through hands-on activities.
Workshop 1 - Drug Discovery
Students learn about the genetic cause of special diseases and the protein defects of disease through protein models to discover a potential cure.
Workshop 2 - Solving Viral Mysteries
Students learn what makes up a virus, how specific viruses take over our cellular machinery, and learn to create their very own unique virus.
Workshop 3 - Discovering Nucleic Acids
Students learn the intricate details of nucleic acids in order to understand the role of nucleic acids in infections and vaccines.
Workshop 4 - Bioengineering the world
Students learn about nanoparticles, their uses, and how they are revolutionizing treatment of neurological diseases.
Workshop 5 - Career Perspectives
Guest speakers from STEM backgrounds discuss their journeys through their careers and adversities.
