The NDRB Prefreshman Research Experience Program

The NPRe Program is a mentor-led, 8-week summer laboratory experience at UTSA that includes weekly seminars on different research topics as part of development workshops. The program seeks to promote the retention of students pursuing science degrees and contribute to the future generation of science professionals.

High School Seniors: Pre-Freshman Graduating 2025

Orientation:  Saturday, May 31, 2025 at 10:00 AM 

Program Dates: June 9th -  August 1st, 2025

Graduation Ceremony: Friday, August 1st, 2025, Times TBD. 


 All student applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Current enrollment in a San Antonio high school.
  2. Current enrollment as a high school senior graduating in 2025.
  3. Demonstrated outstanding general academic achievement with a particular focus on science coursework.
  4. Ability to participate in all program activities as required during the eight-week period (June 9, 2025 through August 1, 2025, generally from 9 AM to 2 PM). 


Certificates of completion will be awarded to all participants at the end of the program and upon the fulfillment of all program requirements. This includes attendance at all summer program lectures, lab participation (20 hours/per week), completion and return of annual program survey, and no more than three absences for the duration of the program.

Application Requirements

The following materials must be submitted by the application deadline of 

May 1st, 2025.


  1. The NPRE Program Application Form. 
  2. Unofficial high school transcript from a School Counselor.  
  3. NPRE Nomination Form signed by a science teacher.
  4. UTSA acceptance letter or orientation confirmation
  5. Essay written by the student that answers the prompt below (100-200 words).
    • Why I want to participate in The NPRE Program.
    • Why The NPRE Program is important to me.
    • What I like about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)

    Additional Registration Information:

  • If you are a parent/guardian applying on behalf of your student, you MUST select that you are applying on behalf of your student and must use a different email address than the student’s email address.
  • If you are applying for more than one student in the same Program year, you will have to complete an additional application for each student. Each student will need their own unique email address, and all must use a different email address from their parent’s email address.
  • After submitting the application, you will receive a confirmation email. If you do not receive a confirmation email, please check your spam/junk folders to verify that the application was submitted.
